Current VAT Rates in Spain

Mainland Spain applies three VAT rates:

  • Standard Rate (21%): This is the default rate for most goods and services.
  • Reduced Rate (10%): This rate applies to most foodstuffs, passenger transport, and hotel and restaurant services.
  • Super Reduced Rate (4%): The lowest rate is applied to essential necessities like bread, milk, eggs, fruit, vegetables, books, and medicines.

Note that the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla have special indirect tax systems and are not part of the EU VAT area.

Spain introduced its Value Added Tax system on January 1, 1986, as a condition of joining the European Economic Community. The initial standard rate was 12%. The rates have been adjusted several times to align with EU directives and respond to domestic economic needs, with the standard rate reaching its current 21% level in 2012.
