Current VAT Rates in Slovenia
Slovenia applies three VAT rates:
- Standard Rate (22%): This is the default rate applied to most goods and services.
- Reduced Rate (9.5%): This rate applies to goods and services such as foodstuffs, water supply, medicines, hotel accommodation, and admission to cultural and sporting events.
- Super Reduced Rate (5%): A special reduced rate of 5% applies exclusively to books, newspapers, and periodicals (both physical and electronic).
History of VAT in Slovenia
Slovenia introduced its Value Added Tax system on July 1, 1999, as part of its economic reforms and preparations to join the European Union. The initial standard rate was 19%. The rates were increased in 2013 in response to economic challenges, bringing them to their current levels.
