Current VAT Rates in Slovakia

Slovakia applies two VAT rates:

  • Standard Rate (20%): This is the default rate for most goods and services.
  • Reduced Rate (10%): This lower rate applies to a specific list of goods, including pharmaceuticals, certain foodstuffs, and books.

History of VAT in Slovakia

Slovakia introduced its Value Added Tax system on January 1, 1993, following the country's independence. The initial standard rate was 23%. The rates have been adjusted over the years to align with the country's economic development and its accession to the European Union in 2004. The standard rate was unified at 19% for a period before being raised to the current 20% in 2011.
