Current VAT Rates in Romania
Romania applies three VAT rates:
- Standard Rate (19%): This is the default rate for most goods and services.
- Reduced Rate (9%): This rate applies to goods and services such as foodstuffs, water supply, medical treatments, and hotel accommodation.
- Super Reduced Rate (5%): The lowest rate is applied to books, newspapers, school textbooks, and tickets to cultural and sporting events.
History of VAT in Romania
Romania introduced its Value Added Tax system on July 1, 1993, with a standard rate of 18%. This was a key step in its transition to a market economy. The rate was increased significantly to 24% in 2010 as a measure to combat economic crisis, before being reduced in stages to the current 19%.
