Current VAT Rates in Greece

Greece applies three primary VAT rates:

  • Standard Rate (24%): This is the default rate for most goods and services.
  • Reduced Rate (13%): This rate applies to some basic foodstuffs, hotel accommodation, and certain services.
  • Super Reduced Rate (6%): The lowest rate is applied to pharmaceuticals, books, and theatre tickets.

Additionally, certain Aegean islands (Lesbos, Chios, Samos, the Dodecanese, and others) have a 30% discount on these rates, resulting in local rates of 17%, 9%, and 4%.

History of VAT in Greece

Greece adopted the VAT system on January 1, 1987, as part of its integration into the European Economic Community. The initial standard rate was 18%. The rates have been adjusted frequently, particularly in response to economic conditions and fiscal policies. The standard rate reached its current level of 24% in 2016.
