Current VAT Rates in Croatia
Croatia has three VAT rates:
- Standard Rate (25%): This is one of the highest standard VAT rates in the EU and applies to most goods and services.
- Reduced Rate (13%): This rate applies to certain goods and services, including accommodation services, newspapers, and utilities like water supply.
- Super Reduced Rate (5%): The lowest rate is applied to essential goods such as bread, milk, medicines, books, and certain foodstuffs.
History of VAT in Croatia
Croatia introduced its Value Added Tax (PDV) system on January 1, 1998, as a key part of its economic reforms. The initial rate was set at 22%. The rate has been adjusted several times to respond to the country's economic needs, notably during the global financial crisis and in the run-up to its accession to the European Union in 2013.
