Japan applies two tax rates:

History of Consumption Tax in Japan

Japan introduced its Consumption Tax system on April 1, 1989, at a low rate of 3%. This was a significant fiscal reform aimed at balancing the tax burden between direct and indirect taxes. The rate has been increased in stages to support Japan's aging population and social security system, reaching its current 10% rate in 2019, which was when the dual-rate system was also introduced.
